Il Mulinetto di Torre is a welcoming and joyous house that lifts the spirits the instant it is entered. The old mill served the local inhabitants for generations. It has been converted into a dwelling with great care and affection in 2005 by master craftsmen using traditional materials. Hidden behind a giant spruce, next to a mill stream with seasonal waterfall, the house is entirely private and tranquil. There are no other houses in sight.
The house is furnished, in part, with antiques. It has a fully equipped modern kitchen with a lava grill, dishwasher, five burner hob with oven, etc. Two air conditioned, double bedrooms, one with king-sized, one with double beds, both with large, tiled en suite bathrooms, comfortable sleeping and luxurious bathing assured. There is a separate laundry.
The large sitting room has a stone monastery fireplace, flat screen satellite TV, extra sleeping area with a shower room. Fresh herbs grow in the garden area. Meticulously clean, always fresh.
Setting
Il Mulinetto di Torre is in an extremely pretty rural area, perfect for keen walkers and hikers, not far from the walled city of Lucca. It is in the foothills of the Apuan Alps. There are many olive groves and vineyards; in fact, the house is set in its own 20 acres of olive trees and woods. There is a winery in the valley below open to visitors. Wild flowers grow along the roadsides.
Natural surroundings and local activities
Chestnuts can be gathered in abundance in the autumn (late October/early November) and wild porcini mushrooms can be found a few days after rain from June to October but you need to know where to look.
There are local festas (sagras) during the summer and the nearest one offers free food and wine. It takes place at the end of July. At others, a modest sum is charged for the theme dish of each sagra. Not many tourists attend these so that it is a pleasant peek into the Italian way of life.
For horseback riders, there is an equestrian centre nearby for rides through the woodlands and along the river for from one hour to three day treks.
