Il Mulinetto di Torre
I was showing photographs of our recent vacation to Italy last night and
just wanted to thank you again for your wonderful home. Our week spent
there in October was more wonderful than I can express. The special
memories include the garden and giant cauliflower, walking up the road
past the church to the highest spot I could reach and soaking in the
view, the incredible coziness of the house, the thoughtfully decorated
bedrooms and bathrooms, the delightful kitchen smelling of your freshly
pressed olive oil as we cooked superb dinners. It was truly a vacation
that will live on in our memories forever.

The accommodation was excellent - certainly the highest standard we experienced in our seven weeks in Europe. The location was superb, very peaceful and relaxing. The directions we received to find Il Mulinetto were very precise and the welcome we received from the owners when we arrived tired from a long drive was very much appreciated. Our stay at Il Mulinettto was certainly the highlight of our trip away and we can't wait to get back there again at some time in the future.

As I write this sipping my 3rd cup of coffee, listening to the orchestra of song birds in the distance, smelling the fresh aroma of everything that is alive on this hill, I'm struck with feelings of contentedness, awe, well being and peace. This Tuscan villa is truly a slice of heaven. My family will cherish the week we pretended to be noble land barons. This has certainly been our favorite destination in Italy.

From the moment we pulled in to the driveway of Il Mulinetto we knew our stay would be special. Sitting in splendid isolation next to a bubbling stream, surrounded by olive trees, the villa is private but still within easy reach of the lovely town of Lucca. The inside of the house is spotless and very tastefully and comfortably furnished with lots of shuttered windows to let the sun stream in. Even in October, we enjoyed breakfasts outdoors and in the evening, when it was a bit chillier, the house was warm and cosy. The owners are the most charming hosts, happy to share their local knowledge, though in no way obtrusive. We would recommend Il Mulinetto to anyone -- families or couples -- and we hope to be back!

Casa della Volpe
This is the kind of place where all your stresses melt away. Life
just slows down and you have to go with it. If only you could bottle
up these feelings, and the wonderful view, and take them home. We
had a wonderful, wonderful time in this lovely villa.

What a delightful place to be -- high in the hills of Tuscany. We ate Tuscan food, even cooked some ourselves because there could be no better place to dine than the garden at Casa della Volpe. During evening walks we met Tuscans, two of whom asked us in for a glass of wine when they did not speak English and we did not speak Italian and thus we got to see inside an Italian country cottage and discover what wonderful people Italians are and how well they can communicate with gestures and good will. It was a pleasure to stay in this charming house and look out over the valley to the town of Lucca. We loved hearing the church bells, having barbecues and dinners with the twinkling lights in the distance and silence all around us.

I almost cried when I had to leave. We all had a wonderful time at here, walking the country roads, meeting fantastically kind Italians out walking as well, seeing people working in their olive groves, cooking our simple meals with olive oil the likes of which we'd never tasted before, and having dinner on the terrace looking at the panoramic view. We visited Cinque Terre, the high mountains of Barga, we biked around the walls of Lucca, we joined the masses in Florence and climbed to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, an unforgettable experience.

What a joy to come back to this tranquil spot after touring all day in the hot sun, having a luxurious shower and then dinner outside as cool breezes fanned away the heat. Italy is a glorious country and the ice cream is irresistible. Our hosts were endlessly helpful in finding a lost bum bag, giving us information on non-tourist places to see. Their personal restaurant guide was a Godsend.

Casa Volpe is an old-old house with every modern convenience. We loved waking up in the morning in comfortable beds to see the wonderful beamed ceilings above us and the countryside falling away into the distance outside the bedroom windows. Then, fresh coffee made in the clever espresso machine, panchetta and eggs with Tuscan toast, dishes into the dishwasher, then off to delightful destinations and finally back to sit outside with a glass of wine to take in the view as darkness fell and the lights in the valley appeared, one by one.

The children kept saying "we are the kings of the mountain" and, indeed, we all felt very lofty in our Tuscan eerie. I had no idea this part of Tuscany was so beautiful with the Apuan Alps jutting into the sky in the distance and with the tree clad hills and silvery olive groves all around us. We visited Cararra where Michaelangelo got his marble, the sweet, melancholy town of Sant'Anna di Strazzema, the village wiped out by the Nazis, and other hilltop villages where few tourists go. We had a wonderful time in Cinque Terre but most of all, we loved biking along the top of the Lucca walls and through the city, shopping in the wonderful delis and pastry shops and coming home to devour delicious prosciutto with melon, ripe tomatoes with buffalo mozzarella, pasta salads and yogurt cheesecake whilst looking down across the valley to Lucca. A perfect holiday in a perfect spot.
